I picked this slab up from the Morton Arboretum in June of 2025 instantly knowing which project I would use it for. For a long time I’ve wanted to combine a settee with a telephone table. The telephone table is obsolete in the modern age but I love the idea of an end table built into a piece of furniture that cantilevers out. I chose walnut for the rest of the piece because I wanted the ginkgo slab to stand out, but I didn’t want the legs and backrest to totally disappear. Despite the fact that the piece is entirely wood, it is extremely comfortable. watching Lord of the Rings would be tough on it, but I have a big fluffy sheepskin draped over it that pretty much solves that problem. I initially thought that my cats would like to sit between the end table and seat, but they much prefer to be smack dab in the middle. I don’t mind. I like looking at them. I like working with slabs and hope to do much more of it in the future.
