Otie Bench

OCT 2024

Walnut, waterfall grain

Otie Bench Otie Bench

This piece is inspired by the woodworking of Wharton Esherick, while also conforming to the specifications given by the client.

I was able to find a beautiful piece of walnut that was long and wide enough for the whole bench, allowing me to cut each joint so the grain pattern is continuous throughout the piece. I am a huge fan of this “waterfall” style of grain, often found in high quality kitchens.

The legs of the piece were hand-shaped to emulate the torso of a dancer, a further nod to Esherick’s style.

Note from the client and creator of this website: the bench is named for my dog, Otie, who uses it to look out the window and loves it very much.
